Tips for achieving optimum performance

Good arrow flight is critical, poor arrow flight robs an arrow of its potential to penetrate because the energy in the arrow is not fully transferred through the head upon impact. Rather the mass in the rear of the arrow will want to pass the mass of the front of the arrow, as the front mass begins to see the resistance of the target and the tail of the arrow will “kick” upon contact with the target.

Broadhead alignment is critical to good arrow flight, a poorly aligned broadhead will “steer” an arrow off course.

Sharpness is also critical to maximizing any given setups penetration. The Abowyer broadhead are ground at 25 degrees, try to maintain the same angle and do 95% of the work on the beveled side and 5% on the flat side using a fine stone and oil working into the cutting edge. We also recommend the KME knife sharpener for our broadheads. You can purchase the KME sharpener on their website at WWW.KMESHARP.COM. Simply follow the KME instructions included with the knife sharpener.

Right Wing, Left Wing

Many times we have been asked “what hand broadhead do I need” or “How do I tell what hand feather or fletch I have”. These are very good questions as a mismatched bevel and fletch combination can cost an archer substantial penetration.

The bevel of the broadhead must match the feather or fletch of the shaft in which it is to be mounted on. The way to determine the bevel of the broadhead is to position the head with the tip pointing up or away from you. Now the side that the bevel is visible on is the hand of the broadhead, or left hand as on the left.

The way to determine the hand of the fletching is to position the arrow with the tip pointing up or away from you. The side that the tip is on in relation to the tail, is the hand of the fletching. Left wing rotates CCW as viewed from the rear of the arrow, and right wing rotates CW as viewed from the rear of the arrow.

Mounting Instructions

Cleaning We recommend that before bonding to the shaft or adapter, that both surfaces are cleaned with either a solvent or soap. This will remove residue from the shaft. We also recommend that the final step before applying the adhesive should be to flash off the inside of the ferrule with a clean flame, we recommend a propane torch.

Use a quality hot melt glue such as Bohning Ferr-L-Tite for mounting Abowyer broadheads.

Gluing the broadheads to an arrow or adapter is done by first mounting the adapter onto the arrow, then slowly warming the glue stick and adapter with a propane torch, until the glue becomes soft. Next, smear the glue onto the adapter or arrow. Then, hold the head with pliers in one hand and the arrow in the other and slowly warm them both until the glue becomes soft and begins to flow. Next, place the head onto the adapter or shaft and align it to your nock/fletch. Lastly, carefully push the tip of the head against a board or other soft material to fully seat the head. Additional heat may be needed at this time to keep the glue soft.

Alignment We recommend using the hot glue joint, to align the tip of the broadhead. If the broadhead does not spin true, warm up the glue area, and apply pressure to the head as the glue cools to improve alignment.
